Chester Business Club has secured Frank Bruno to be guest of honour at a special sportsman’s lunch event next year.

The former World Heavyweight Champion will be the star attraction at a Club Sportsman’s Lunch at Chester Racecourse.

Frank had a highly publicised and eventful career, both in and out of the ring, now told in his latest book, Bruno – 60 Years a Fighter, in which he reveals how he was secretly sectioned during lockdown – after suffering a ‘terrifying’ relapse in his battle with mental ill health.

The former champion, who was diagnosed with bipolar following his retirement from boxing, spent six weeks in hospital after family and friends grew increasingly concerned about his behaviour.
He says, ‘I went to hell and back during lockdown and ended up at rock bottom. At times, I wondered if I’d get through it. It was the most terrifying time of my life. But now I am ready to tell the full story about what happened.’

He has now made a full recovery and is launching a new campaign via his charity, the Frank Bruno Foundation, to combat a pandemic in mental health which he fears Covid-19 has created.

Club chairman Roy Shelton says, ‘We are delighted Frank has accepted our invitation. It will be a great opportunity to meet and listen to not only one of the country’s boxing heroes but also one of the most colourful and endearing characters in sporting history.’

The CBC Lunch will take place on Friday 4th March 2022 in the Pavilion Suite at Chester Racecourse. The ticket price will be £69.
