Although the Chester Business Club didn’t start out with any overt ‘charitable’ intent, it soon became clear that the Members wanted to be involved, in some way, in supporting local charities.
It started with a CBC Walk For Charity, an event that has been repeated every year since 1987, and has blossomed into an annual Charity Ball and an annual Charity Golf Day.
In addition some of our Speaker Dinners are occasions when we have helped in raising funds for worthy causes. Dinner speakers who used their ‘celebrity’ status on this basis have included Kate Adie (Bristol Cancer Care), Roy Hattersley (The Salvation Army), David Owen (Cystic Fibrosis), Brian Rix (Mencap), Martin Bell (Cancer Research), Jeremy Vine (Hope & Homes for Children), Ann Widdecombe (orphanage in Nigeria), Virginia McKenna (Plan International), Gyles Brandreth (British Heart Foundation), David Puttnam (Unicef), Libby Purves (Family Holiday Association), Nicholas Owen (Hospice of the Good Shepherd), Simon Weston (Royal Star & Garter Homes for Disabled Servicemen & Women), Angela Rippon (British Red Cross), Esther Rantzen (ChildLine/NSPCC),Edwina Currie (Hospice of the Good Shepherd) and Sir Martyn Lewis (National Council for Voluntary Organisations).
In July 2017, charities and good causes were presented with cheques totalling £15,000 during the annual general meeting of the Chester Business Club.

What is normally included
The Club’s Charity events take different forms. For example, Club Dinners often feature a guest speaker who attends ‘in the name of’ a specific charity to which CBC will make a donation.
Charity Events include the annual Sponsored Walk, Charity Golf Day and Charity Ball.
The types of venues people can look forward to visiting
Charity Dinners take place in the Club’s preferred hotels, whereas the Charity Ball is usually held at Chester Racecourse, and the Golf Day at Chester GC.
The features and benefits of attending
These Charity events allow Members and their guests to show support for the Club’s nominated charitable organisations as part of ‘giving back’ to the local community and those in need.
